How good is online science information in my language? Auditing science on Google worldwide

Skills / interests: Dissemination / Knowledge Translation, Translation (linguistic)

שלום, Hello, مرحبا, Привет, Merhaba, Hola, Olá, Bonjour, Hallo, 你好, こんにちは, नमस्ते, 안녕하세요

Your chances of finding quality scientific information depends on the language you search in, and it shouldn’t be that way. We all have the right to access quality scientific information in our language.  You can watch the first outcome of a comparative study of the quality of canonical science information in three different languages - Hebrew, Arabic, and English - in this tri-lingual video here: https://youtu.be/ZYTlIdUWxss, and read the open access research note here: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/09636625211022975

The next reserach study is underway to explore the quality of online science information globally, using search terms that reflect the diversity of interests and concerns of people worldwide. Can you help?

We have created initial lists of terms in four categories: Canonical terms (Based on the TTrends in International Mathematics and Science Study); Socio-scientific terms (Based on the UN Sustainable Development Goals); Scientific news (Based on scientific summarys of the year 2020 of leading scientific journals; and Scientific conspiracies (Based on extensive literature review on conspiracy theories).

Can you help the effort to create an inclusive list of search terms and search queries in different languages?

This is what you need to do:

  • Open the Excel file - it contains the lists of terms so far. See the attachment below!
  • Fill out the first tab of your details! This way we can make sure you get acknowledgment for the work you do...and Cochrane Membership points! Results can also be passed onto you at the end.
  • Tanslate terms in your language - Any language is welcome and we are happy to get multiples of one language so we can cross-check so please don't hestitate to contribute! Each tab has terms for you translate. There is also a coloum for you to leave us comments on how you or people in your country may search for the issue on Google.

It should be a short and easy task taking maybe an hour or so of your time....but it's contributing to imporant work!

There is lots of help to  answer yoru questions and clarify along the way! Master student Roni Shapira sroni100@gmail.com; PhD student Shakked Dabran shakkeda@gmail.com, and Prof. Ayelet Baram-Tsabari ayelet@technion.ac.il are all ready to help!

If you want to participate, let me know on TaskExchange and just fill out the Excel table. The Excel table can be handed back via TaskExchange messages or emailed to mumoquit@cochrane.org

Ideal applicant

Any location, any language, any background! We just need you to fill in an Excel table. Should take about an hour of time.

We welcome all languages -- even duplicates! If you see the translation in your language please look over translations and see if you agree. Sometimes there may be country or cultural differences in what terms people may use. It's also good to know if you have other terms you think we may have missed.

I am a native Arabic speaker. I've found that you have the Arabic translation already covered. Is there anything else I can contribute?
